About the series

The spaciousness of the Californian landscape has inspired me to contain it within a photograph.

 For me, the changing landscape has become a space for spiritual contemplation, and I see the diversity and the complexity of the landscape (deserts, valleys, and oceans) as a perfect place to transcend the traditional two-dimensional space of a photograph.  As a result, these photographs have taken on sculptural form and give the illusion of dimensionality.  I use fabric dyed with plants from the California landscape, and elements collected and harvested within the landscape (harvested ocean salt, sand, rocks) to add another layer to the imagery.  These additions bridge a connection between small, tactile objects and the larger, untouchable vastness of the landscape.   

I  have become increasingly interested in peeling back (and adding) layers within the frame to engage viewers and bring up questions of illusion, time, and our constantly changing relationship to photographic imagery. This can be compared to our constantly changing relationship to our environment and the landscape throughout history: glacial shifts, drought, earthquakes, mudslides, falling rocks, erosion- the visible, and invisible, are all elements that I continue to explore.
